Alternative Music: Listening to the Beat of a Different Drummer

Alternative music is a phrase that came into existence during the 1980's. New music genres were popping up that just didn't fit into the mainstream tunes of the time. Underground artists and bands like R.E.M., Talking Heads, and The Cure became the new catch phrases and sounds of the day.

These novel notes of the 21st century extend far beyond the original punk rock inspired sounds of the 20th century that slowly evolved into the grunge movement honoring alternative bands like Nirvana. Now when we hear the reference to this type of music, we might think of listening to such things as New Age art resonances or intense electronic sounds.

Nowadays, alternative music doesn't seem so uncommon or bizarre anymore. It isn't noise that's just linked to hippie granola crunchers or gothic head bangers. It appears to have moved farther from "the edge" and closer to the mainstream. It's almost cool to be different.

Are you on a quest for meditative chanting melodies? Looking for musical scores featuring instruments that you've never heard before? Curious about binaural beats? Interested in what new groups are being labeled as alternative? Search the web and you'll probably find more of this classification of unusual music information than you imaged possible such as new age smooth jazz.

If you and your band are alternative music makers and embrace this new age art, share your sounds with the web world. Find an agent and label for your unique compositions. Listen to the competition or become inspired by the endless variety of modern mixes and expressions of sound.

Expand your musical horizons and try some new tunes. Your open-minded ways just might help bring atypical sounds into the forefront. You might even redefine your concept of alternative. Remember, at one time rap songs were considered non-conforming by many people. For some, it still is. One person's alternative music is another person's classical chords. Happy listening!
