"Inducing Consciousness on the Way to Cognition," by Glen Davidson

The definition of consciousness is a sense of one's personal or collective identity, which also includes the attitudes, beliefs, and sensitivities held by or considered characteristic of an individual or group. For example: Love of freedom runs deep in the national consciousness.

In psychology, it is a term that refers to a state of awareness of the self and one's environment. Freud spent much of professional life contemplating the nature of consciousness. From the perspective of Freudian psychology cognitive conscious behavior largely includes the cognitive processes of the ego, such as thinking, perception, and planning; also some aspects of the superego, such as moral conscience. There are some psychologists who deny the distinction between conscious and unconscious behavior. There are others who use the term to indicate all the activities of an individual that constitute the personality, such as the aforementioned definition.

Then again, in recent theories neuropsychologists have begun to investigate the links between one's consciousness and their memory, as well as altered states of inducing consciousness and the more natural altered states such as our dream states.

The book, "Inducing Consciousness on the Way to Cognition," by Glen Davidson makes the case for consciousness being a matter of field interactions. He shares that these fields are probably the electrical fields arising around the nerves and their impulses. This approach is taken as primarily cognitive and from the depth of psychology. He believes that one should not consider this subject from the level of abstraction and logic, for these apparently are secondary and partly derived. However, the book is also integrative with scientific observation and thought.

Throughout the book the various conscious states are described as a continually shifting force, like a collectivity of interacting electrical fields is while in a dynamic state of flux. This creates an infinitely variable state of massive possibility. Therefore, consciousness as we know it, is a state where consciousness is typically changing and passing out of consciousness.

If you want to dig deep into the mysteries of the various conscious states, Glen Davidson's book on inducing consciousness may be a good choice and is available to download. Or you might prefer to explore the various states of conscious exploration, like why we dream, what are daydreams, where our state of being rests when we are unconscious.
