Facts about Dolphins: Bottlenecks and Spinners

When learning the facts about dolphins, one of the first questions you might have is what do dolphins eat? Next, you may wonder how they sleep and how people may interact with them in nature? They are one of the most fascinating mammals because they live in water and are incredibly intelligent, playful and friendly.

When gazing into a their eyes, they seem to have a built in smile and their eyes greet back with sparkle and a sense of connection. They have smooth hairless bodies, with powerful tail fins and horizontal flukes which give them great mobility in and out of the water. Their dorsal and forefins are used for steering. They breathe air through a single blowhole.

Today these amazing mammals are valued and exploited as the main attractions in water shows worldwide. The bottle-nosed have been studied the most out of as many as fifty species. There is much research invested into their communication. When listening to them they produce a wide variety of sounds, up to frequencies ten times those heard by human beings. It is fascinating how each has its own identifying whistle. A baby dolphin, or calf, quickly learns it's mother's specific whistle. They converse with on another and can even communicate instructions. There's so much humans have yet to learn about the dolphin language. You may wonder, who is the most intelligent?

Because they are so smart, they are capable of solving problems and multi-tasking. They approach most everything with a playful attitude and are also known to be alert when people are in trouble in the water. There are many reports of one finding and rescuing a person from drowning. No, a dolphin won't eat you if you are in the water, they would be more apt to observe you and perhaps connect should they feel inclined to do so.

Another interesting fact about a dolphin is how they sleep. When they sleep only one half of their brain does so, the other is awake. They are conscious breathers, so if both sides of their brain went to sleep they would drown. They float at the surface and keep one eye open at all times. Oh, yes, and what do dolphins eat? They are carnivores and eat squid or fish.
