Ecopsychology: Giving New Meaning to Human Nature

Chances are that you've never heard the term "eco-psychology" used before. This is a term for an emerging field that ties the human mind to the natural world. At its core, it suggests that there is a synergistic relationship between planetary and personal well being; that the needs of the one are relevant to the other.

Perhaps one of the best definitions for such a word can be found in Theodore Roszak's book entitled "The Voice of the Earth: An Exploration of Ecopsychology." In this extremely informative work, Roszak states that, "Eco-psychology seeks to heal the…fundamental alienation between the person and the natural environment."

While a fairly new concept, there is actually an organization known as The International Community for Ecopsychology (ICE). Their overall mission is to "provide a public forum for our diverse experiences of the human-nature relationship" and to "provide a bridge towards harmony with the planet we inhabit."

A unique and refreshing idea, ecopsychological studies are also being conducted to study such things as the effects that lengthy visits to wilderness areas can have on one's psychological being and how healing the earth can lead to healing one's mind. There are a growing number of individuals that offer ecopsychological services of an educational and/or therapeutic nature.

If you're interested in learning more about the interconnectedness of the human mind and the health and well-being of the environment, delve into your own personal study. Consider reading Allen Kanner's book "Ecopsychology: Restoring the Earth, Healing the Mind" or Michael Cohen's "Reconnecting with Nature: Finding Wellness through Restoring Your Bond with the Earth." Post a question at the Seeds for Thought blog on www.thoughtoffering.blogs.com/ice_seeds/. If you're really interested, consider a career as an ecopsychologist! The sky's the limit when it comes to ecopsychological insight.

Scott Taylor's Research in Ecopsychology - This study is an investigation into the psychological effects of being in wilderness for extended stays.
