Hawaiian Huna
If looking for the term "huna" in the Hawaiian language you will find the word simply means "secret". In two known Hawaiian dictionaries it is cited in compounds like lua huna, meaning "secret cave". However, if you travel to Hawaii and mention the term, you will find the native hawaiian locals will smile. Then they will reference the term kahuna, which is a Hawaiian mystic and sorcerer who holds the ancient secrets and practices them. However, in the language a Kahuna also refers to any skilled person, such as a doctor or lawyer.
The Huna Fellowship was founded in 1945 by a spiritualist entrepreneur named Max Freedom. Through his observations he gave this name to a sacred tradition he learned from the Hawaiians he befriended while in the islands working as a school teacher. He published a series of books on Huna that are still available in print.
In 1975, another Huna teacher came forth, Serge Kahili King, to carry on the teachings though massage, workshops, and printed material. Although King is not ethnic Hawaiian, he has many followers of his order and teaching, mostly non Hawaiian, who embrace the wisdom of this spiritual movement.
