Sacred Art: Create a Mandala and Share a Sacred Space

When you think of mandala art the spiritual Tibetan Mandalas or the Buddhist Mandala may be the first images that come to mind. They represent some of the most perfected and beautiful meditation art found. The circular shape and geometric patterns lure the eye and have the ability to capture the mind in contemplation of the complexity and yet simplicity of the universe. It is thought that by meditating on this sacred art the secrets of the totality of the universe may unfold. To symbolize the impermanence of all things physical (a central teaching of Buddhism), after many weeks or months of creating the intricate pattern of this sacred art, the entire work is usually placed in a body of running water. This is thought to spread the blessings of the Mandala to all that is.

You don't have to be a Tibetan or Buddhist monk to appreciate mandala art or to even create a Mandala. By searching the Internet you can find free Mandalas to color and unique circular patterns to print and create for your own appreciation, whether it be to create a meditation tool, or a beautiful pattern to place in a sacred space in your home. You can even find modern artists who incorporate this symbolic art into their works of art. With the aid of computer graphics the complex patterns are easy to render and there are software web graphic tools to aid you in creating your own masterpieces.

You don't need a history lesson to appreciate sacred art, nor do you have to be an artist to create one. A fun project to do with your children is to create sun Mandala art. Here a group of children work with the simple shape of the circle and create their rendition of the sun. Such a simple concept can create a sacred space of connection and creativity. You might find that impermanence will be the last thing on your mind. For as your children create a Mandala it just may be the perfect art to place in that special frame and hang for all to see.
