Mythology Creature: From the Rising Phoenix to the Perched Griffin
Bastet Egyptian mythology focuses around the daughter of Ra, named Bast. She was a cat-headed goddess of fertility, sensuality and fire prevention. She was known as a feisty god, avenging wrongs and center of an annual celebration. This is believed to be the source of the Egyptian practice of mummifying felines and placing them in burial crypts. It is know that cats were loved and worshiped, probably because of the Bast myths.
Another focus of mythology, griffins were monsters with the body of a lion, the head and wings of an eagle and a feathered back. The physical attributes of long claws and talons were reputed to be large enough to make each one into a drinking cup for humans. The griffin was said to build a nest and lay eggs like agates. In all these societies, the physical depiction is of a bird that rises from its own ashes and is therefore associated with the sun.
