Tunes from New Age Music Artists

Funny thing about the songs found in new age music albums, the nature of this genre isn't new at all.

The term refers to the type of music listened to by practitioners of the "Aquarius movement," which takes an eclectic view of world wide religions and their practices.

The typical songs on these albums often consist of melodies or chants written by traditional Irish Celtic musicians and backed up with drums, lutes, flutes or guitars. India has greatly influenced the mediation and chant artists, such as Terry Riley and Lamonte Young, both of whom became popular when the musicians offering this era of musical tunes emerged during the turbulent sixties.

A favorite album of this genre is from a metaphysical group of practitioners, Steve and David Gordon, whose powerful drumming creates the perfect backdrop for a ritual or celebration dance. Grammy winner Enya sings her spiritual tunes and chants in both the ancient Irish language of Gaelic and in Latin. These are just a couple examples of some of the best new age music artists.

The artists of this generation do not only rely on the quiet lute or the rhythmic drum. Tangerine Dream was a huge success in the early sixties, a true break out for the movement, and did virtually all of their stuff using electronics and a brand new technology-at the time- called "digital." Although no longer available in your local record store, you can pick up their classic album (and yes, it's available on vinyl) Pheadra through the band's private label TDI.

Along with being able to look up older musical treats (need a copy of the original score from "Hair?") on your search engine, there are many resources via internet for finding the perfect spirit guided artist or inspiring drum beat, simply type in your favorite new age music album or you can visit NewWorldMusic.com to choose from the latest in guided meditation, ritual drumming, or inspirational music of the new millenium.
