Nursing Education and Patient Care
Nursing can be a great career choice for those who love helping people but have no interest in becoming medical doctors.
Nurses are every bit as important as doctors in the care of the sick or infirm patient.
Nursing requires quite a bit of education. Training for a registered nurse requires a two-year degree as a minimum requirement.
For specialized training, four years of college are required. For the most specialized nursing positions, a master's degree may be the minimum requirement. Some nurse researchers hold doctorate degrees, and some RN's and LPN's go on to take continuing education classes in alternative healing systems like, massage, hands on healing, Reiki, reflexology and other techniques to assist in helping their patients heal faster.
A nurse is critical to patient care because doctors do not give medication at the time of each dose. The doctor determines the medication and dosage and the nurse provides, for hospital in-patient care, the medication in a timely manner. The nurse also monitors patient status by taking blood pressure, body temperature, pulse and respiration. Nursing duties sometimes include monitoring what the patient eats and drinks and body fluid output. Depending on the nature of the illness, the nursing professional may be required to give injections at specified times of the day and night, per the doctor's order.
Nursing professionals in many hospitals must carry their own malpractice insurance, just like doctors. However, nursing malpractice premiums are much more affordable. When you next encounter a nurse, keep in mind the schooling, cost of insurance and other factors that contribute in supporting this person in being the professional nurse who has your best interest at heart whose there helping you rapidly get better.
