Oracles of Divination and Insight: From Crystal Balls to Old Gypsy Fortune Telling Cards
From ancient Celtic rune stones to chicken bones to crystal balls, every culture has its own sacred toys, games, and other paraphernalia for telling the future.
One of the oldest of these is the Ouija board. Long before Parker Brothers manufactured the popular oracle board game, these were handmade by printing each letter of the alphabet on a separate piece of paper, along with the words "yes" and "no."
These were set out in a semi-circle near a burning fire and a plain water glass was placed upside down in the center. The reason that these fortune telling games were constructed out of common household objects was not because people couldn't afford or didn't want expensive and ornate wooden boards, but for a much more life threatening reason.
During the inquisition, literally millions of people were tortured and executed for heresy all over the world, so it became necessary to make tools such as the Ouija board out of material that was easily disposable-thrown into the hearth if an uninvited guest were to suddenly knock on your door. (Old gypsy fortune telling cards were common playing cards, not the pricey and intricate tarot cards found in your local new age bookstore.)
Known among earth stewards as "The Burning Times," so many were slaughtered for their reluctance to give up their beliefs and follow the teachings of the Roman Catholic Church that one town in Germany was left with only nine inhabitants.
Today we are free to purchase and use all types of destiny foretelling vehicles, with no fear of repercussion. It is a gift that the ones who went before us made possible, so each time you use your crystal ball, tarot deck, or throw your rune stones, give a little libation of thanks. You know not who looks over your shoulder.
