Osho: Bhagwan Shree Rajneesh
Osho was the founder and leader of a controversial new religious movement who lived in India and the United States.
His birth name was Rajneesh Chandra Mohan Jain.
He was born on in 1931 and died in 1990. During the seventies he was known as Bhagwan Shree Rajneesh and later as Osho.
Osho opposed the established religions, saying they were no longer appropriate for the accelerated pace of today's modern life. He vowed to keep his Sanyasens from creating a religious order centered around his teaching. He claimed that the greatest values in life involve love, laughter and meditation. He also believed that spiritual enlightenment was the path of human life.
Osho's followers claim that he was unique in his syncretism of a number of philosophic systems previously thought to oppose one another. This was evident when reading the many books he wrote. His writings consist of as many as 600 books on various spiritual traditions. He also developed several meditations sytles.
When sharing his beliefs about religion he felt that they all were valid having been founded by an enlightened master, as he pointed to Christ, Pythagoras, Buddha, Mohammed. Later he said they were corrupted by the official church.
Wherever he was located he seemed to bring with him a lot of controversy. Some felt that because his truths were extracted and expounded from various spiritual sources his authenticity as an enlightened master were questioned. This was magnified because he was said to flee India for tax evasion and his later actions within the spiritual community centered around him in the United States lead to unfortunate circumstances for he and his community followers. He eventually was asked to leave the country.
Regardless of the questionable circumstances centered around Osho, or Bhagwan, he still has many Sanyasen devotees around the world. His many books, and meditation techniques are still selling and practiced today.
