The Rune Symbols Guided Viking Travelers

It is believed that Vikings came from Greenland to what is now Minnesota by way of the great lakes. Like all tribes, these hunter/gathers had a deep belief in the warning signs and omens of the earth and sky, and used the runes alphabet-etched on disks of wood or stone to predict their destiny and record their travels. ( It was merely another system of writing) In the late 1800's, after the discovery of a large rune stone by a local farmer, treasure seekers made off with many of these tablets, but some can still be found today at the Minnesota Rune Museum.

The practice of predicting the future with these stones is called "runecasting." The purpose is to help the querient to make decisions based on what they already know in their mind's eye. Often we know the answer to our questions-we just need validation. This is apparent anytime we make a choice by the toss of a coin. Toss a coin, while it is in the air for an instant you usually hope what side it will land on, don't you? You made your decision long ago; you just needed to "see" it. This is called an oracle.

The rune symbols are simple and carved in diagonal or straight lines. This is because they were originally carved in wood and the cut followed the natural grain. There is little difference between Viking and Celtic runes, Norway and European tribes were using them around the same time.

Runecasting by selecting just one stone to answer a question or contemplation is called '' Odin's Rune," and is a simple daily act that you can use for discipline and focus. Simply scatter them and turn them etched side down. Contemplate a problem, and choose one stone. Guides for the meanings of each one can be found online or in any bookstore. The runes alphabet can help you bring forth answers and ease your mind.
