Sound Healing: From Singing Bowls to Getting Your Music Therapy Degree

By Robin Ohara

Ever hear a song and it reminds you of someone? Maybe you were in a bad mood and the song made you smile. This is a form of sound energy healing, and with a music therapy degree you can help others using vibrational healing to alleviate stress, manage pain, and express regressed feelings. This kind of soul healing works by manipulating physiological workings of the body like breathing (classical music is soothing, etc) heart rate (get it pumping with African drum beats) or to lower blood pressure. (I prefer Barry White)

I got a chance to experience Tibetan singing bowls out in the Nevada desert this last summer. Made from copper and typically plated using patina, each bowl is constructed to resonate with a specific note that corresponds to each charka. For instance, if you are feeling stress and depression, a bowl which resonates in the key of "B" will help you restore your faith. This key is associated with the crown or seventh chakra-you were probably thinking too much, weren't you? That can make anyone depressed.

The desert was a real spiritual inspiration on its own, but by adding mediation by using sound healing in the key of "A" (brow charka) it is attuned to increasing intuition and clairvoyance. For those of you with trouble articulating-and this is where healing music is used with abused children-soft sounds in the key of "G" (throat charka, of course) has documented study results indicating increased communication skills. The heart charka sounds in the key of ''F" and can help with compassion and balance, the solar plexus is the key of "E" can increase self esteem- great for working with children-and for blocked creativity try a bowl in "D" for the second charka, the spleen.

If you only get one bowl, I would go for one in the key of "C"-first charka, grounding and stability; because we could all use some daily grounding, and you don't need a music therapy degree to use one of these bowls.
